Prairie Smoke, a Collection of Lore of the Prairies

This is a vanished world preserved in文字. In 1922, Melvin R. Gilmore, himself of mixed Native heritage, set down stories and traditions from the tribes of the Great Plains before they were lost to assimilation, relocation, and time. What remains is a window into how the Mandan, Hidatsa, Arikara, and other nations understood the prairie, not as empty land to be conquered, but as a living presence that demanded reciprocity and respect. The stories gathered here move from creation accounts to animal fables, from seasonal ceremonies to observations of wind and weather, each one carrying a philosophy of interdependence with the natural world. Gilmore wrote with ethnographic precision but also with evident love for his material, allowing the voices of indigenous storytellers to speak across nearly a century of disruption. For readers interested in the earliest layers of American literature, or in understanding the land through eyes that saw it whole, this slim volume holds wisdom that predates the fences and cities that now dominate the plains.
