Polly's Senior Year at Boarding School

The carriage crawls up the long hill toward Seddon Hall, and for Polly Pendleton and Lois Farwell, everything has changed and nothing has changed. Their hair is up, their skirts are longer, and they bear the new weight of being seniors in a school where they once arrived as wide-eyed freshmen. Yet when Polly's eyes still twinkle and Lois lets loose her sudden merry laugh, you realize that some things endure beyond fashion and circumstance. This is their final year at boarding school, and Dorothy Whitehill captures that strange liminal space where adolescence meets adulthood with tender precision. The girls navigate new dynamics among the student body, welcome fresh faces, and face the quiet knowledge that this chapter of their lives is winding to a close. Whitehill writes with warmth about the small dramas of schoolgirl existence: the friendships that deepen, the responsibilities that accumulate, the bittersweet awareness that these are the last days of something precious. For readers who cherish the quiet pleasures of vintage coming-of-age fiction, who find joy in the texture of another era's daily life, this is a gentle portrait of two friends standing on the threshold of the grown-up world, neither quite ready to leave childhood behind.
