Polly of the Hospital Staff

This is a quietly revolutionary book: a story about the smallest acts of courage in the unlikeliest places. Set in a convalescent ward in 1912, it follows Polly May, a girl who finds herself hospitalized alongside other children recovering from illness. Rather than succumb to the institutional dullness and loneliness that defines so much early 20th century depictions of childhood illness, Polly becomes a beacon. She tells stories. She promises new tales to the children waiting for her. She provides comfort not through any grand gesture, but through the simple, radical act of paying attention to others who are suffering alongside her. The narrative asks questions that still resonate: How do we maintain our humanity when confined to sterile walls? What do we owe to those we meet in our most vulnerable moments? This is a book about the quiet heroism of being present, the bravery required to bring light to dark spaces, and the temporary families we form when we're at our most vulnerable.
