Poker Jim, Gentleman, and Other Tales and Sketches

The rough-and-tumble mining camps and boomtowns of 19th-century California provide the backdrop for this collection of uncommonly vivid tales. At its heart stands Poker Jim, a gambler who operates by his own code of honor in a land where the law is still learning to walk. Lydston, a physician by trade, brings an outsider's eye to frontier life, finding nobility in the damned and tragedy in the forgotten. The collection ranges wider than its titular hero, from the sad street-soiledtale of Tommy the Outcast to a retelling of a Yosemite Indian legend retrieved from obscurity. These are not sanitized Western adventures but character-driven sketches that treat their rough subjects with genuine human sympathy. The writing carries both the medical precision of its author and a romantic's fondness for a frontier that was already vanishing by the time these stories were composed. For readers who crave the American West as it actually was: gritty, violent, and strange.
