Poine: A Study in Ancient Greek Blood-Vengeance

Before the courts, before written law, there was blood. This 1923 scholarly work unravels the ancient Greek concept of poine , the complex web of vengeance, compensation, and moral obligation that governed violent conflict in Homeric society. Hubert Joseph Treston fills a glaring gap in classical scholarship: no comprehensive study had yet examined how the Greeks understood and practiced blood-vengeance, and how these customs gradually shaped their legal and social institutions. Drawing extensively on the Iliad and Odyssey, Treston maps the spectrum of vendetta , from unrestricted blood-revenge to formalized compensation systems like wergeld , arguing that these practices were not mere barbarism but the foundations upon which Greek law evolved. The work situates Greek customs within broader comparative frameworks, showing how Mediterranean cultures grappled with the same fundamental problem: how does a society balance justice with survival when the state cannot intervene? For classicists, legal historians, and anyone curious about the roots of Western justice, this remains a thought-provoking excavation of the violent origins of order.
