Poetical Works

Charles Churchill was thirty-one years old when he died in 1764, but in his brief life he became the most dangerous poet in England. This collection gathers the verse that made him infamous: scathing satirical attacks on politics, theater, religion, and the endless pretensions of the powerful. His pen was a blade and he wielded it without mercy. The famous "The Rosciad," his savage portrait of the London stage, made him famous overnight and ensured he'd never lack for enemies. What makes Churchill worth reading now isn't just his sharpness, though that remains remarkable. It's his fury. He wrote with the genuine anger of a man who believed the world should be better than it was. This collection captures a writer destroyed by his own intensity, yet the rage feels startlingly modern. For readers who want poetry that bites back.
