Playing Santa Claus, and Other Christmas Tales

Set in the aftermath of the American Civil War, this 1865 collection of Christmas stories follows two sisters, Caroline and Emma, who discover that the true spirit of the season lies not in receiving but in giving. When the girls realize their neighbors, Mary and Ellen Drayton, will have little to celebrate, they decide to become Santa Claus themselves, using their own money to bring warmth and wonder to less fortunate children. The stories weave together the lives of the wealthy and the poor, exploring what it means to share abundance with those who have less. Written in the earnest, didactic style characteristic of Victorian children's literature, these tales deliver their moral lessons about compassion with genuine warmth. For readers interested in historical children's literature or the evolution of Christmas traditions, these stories offer a window into how Victorians understood charity, family, and holiday joy.
