Pioneer Life Among the Loyalists in Upper Canada

They lost everything but their loyalty. After the American Revolution, thousands of colonists who had sided with the British Crown faced an impossible choice: swear allegiance to the new republic or leave behind their homes, lands, and lives for the wild northern frontier. This is their story. Walter Stevens Herrington reconstructs the remarkable journey of the United Empire Loyalists who settled Upper Canada in the 1780s, transforming dense wilderness into the foundations of English-speaking Canada. Through court records, diaries, and oral histories, he chronicles the brutal first years: the race to build log cabins before winter, the struggle to clear land stubborn with roots and stone, the establishment of makeshift courts and schools before most settlers had ever seen a judge or opened a book. The narrative follows the communities as they evolved from desperate refugee camps into thriving townships, complete with doctors, teachers, and the complicated machinery of local government. A century after these events, Herrington wrote with urgency to preserve stories already fading from living memory. His account reads as both history and elegy, capturing a vanished world where survival demanded constant improvisation and where the simple act of planting a garden was an act of faith in an uncertain future. For anyone curious about the origins of Canadian identity, or about what it costs to hold fast to conviction when the world has shifted against you, this book opens a door onto a founding generation worth remembering.
