Pictures of the Old French Court: Jeanne De Bourbon, Isabeau De Bavière, Anne De Bretagne

Three queens. One throne. A century of blood and ambition. Mrs. Bearne's 1900 history chronicles the lives of Jeanne de Bourbon, Isabeau de Bavière, and Anne de Bretagne, women who wielded power, endured catastrophe, and shaped France's darkest and most glorious years. From the cataclysm of the Hundred Years' War to the glittering courts where survival meant strategy, their stories reveal how personal joy and national calamity were forever intertwined. Jeanne marries the Dauphin and knows both tenderness and tragedy; Isabeau rules as the realm crumbles around her; Anne, twice queen of France, becomes the very symbol of Breton resistance. Bearne writes not as a distant chronicler but as someone who understands that history is made of flesh and blood, of choices made under impossible pressure. The result is a book that feels less like a textbook and more like sitting across from a knowing friend who happens to have mastered the archives. For readers who savor immersive narrative history, who want their facts draped in atmosphere and human warmth.
