Pictures in Colour of the Isle of Wight

A rare surviving artifact of early 20th-century travel publishing, this collection presents fifty vivid color photographs that capture the Isle of Wight at a moment of Edwardian elegance. The images range from the dramatic white cliffs of the Needles to the tea-colored cottages of Shanklin, from the romantic ruins of Appuldurcombe Abbey to the sheltered elegance of Ventnor's seaside promenades. Each photograph is accompanied by descriptive notes that situate the viewer in both place and time, revealing an island that served as playground for Victorian and Edwardian Britain. The book documents an England before the Great War, when the Isle of Wight stood as the undisputed jewel of English seaside holidays, hosting artists, poets, and holidaymakers aboard paddle steamers from Portsmouth and Southampton. These are not mere travel snapshots but carefully composed visions of a vanished world, their colors faded into palettes that now feel authentically antique. For anyone drawn to vintage photography, British coastal history, or the peculiar melancholy beauty of preserved moments, this book offers ninety pages of quiet, enduring fascination.
