Biographies

This is two lives rendered in one book: the artist Philip Gilbert Hamerton recounting his own formation from 1834 to 1858, followed by his widow Eugénie picking up the pen to trace his mature years until his death in 1894. The result is an unusually intimate portrait of a Victorian polymath who became one of England's most influential art critics and a passionate advocate for the then-emerging English Etching Revival. The first half reads as a meditation on loss and becoming: Hamerton lost his mother at birth, was raised by loving aunts, then endured his father's brutal authoritarianism, a duality of tenderness and cruelty that shaped his artistic sensibility. The second half, written by Eugénie who was also his publisher and collaborator, offers the view from within his later life: his friendships with artists, his championing of printmaking, his years at the ink press. Together, the two voices create a complete arc of a life devoted to seeing and making. For readers curious about the Victorian art world, or anyone drawn to memoirs that trace how an artist is made, this dual autobiography remains remarkably fresh.
