Personal Recollections of Distinguished Generals

William Franklin Gore Shanks

1866

Biographies, History - American, History - Warfare

In the immediate aftermath of the Civil War, journalist William Franklin Gore Shanks did something radical: he approached the Union's most famous generals not as monuments to be reverenced, but as human beings to be understood. His 1866 portraits capture these commanders in what he calls "undress uniform" - stripped of ceremonial distance, revealing the eccentricities, anxieties, and raw humanity beneath the stars and stripes. Sherman emerges particularly vivid: the "madman" of popular legend turns out to be a man of sharp wit and strange melancholy, brilliant but deeply odd, capable of both devastating strategic clarity and unsettling unpredictability. Other figures receive similar treatment - their vanities, their fears, their petty irritations and grand inspirations all rendered with an intimacy that no later historian could achieve. This is history from the moment it was still breathing, before legend calcified into myth, when these men were still alive, still contentious, still capable of surprising anyone who looked closely.
