Perez the Mouse

Once upon a time, a Jesuit priest in the Spanish court wrote a bedtime story for a six-year-old king. That story became the origin of the Pérez Mouse tradition that still lives in Spanish-speaking homes today. The tale follows young King Bubi, who loses his first tooth and discovers the magical custom of leaving it for Pérez the Mouse to collect. When the king meets Pérez, he's enchanted by the little creature's stories and embarks on an adventure to help a poor boy named Giles. Through this encounter, the sheltered young monarch witnesses poverty for the first time and is so moved that he transforms into a mouse to understand Giles's suffering. The story is a tender lesson in empathy and royal responsibility, disguised as whimsy. It endures because it captures something true about childhood: the magic of believing that a small creature cares enough to visit, and the deeper magic of learning to care for others.
