At a school prize-giving ceremony bathed in church-like solemnity, a boy named Paquito collects award after award, yet feels the crushing weight of his mother's absence. This is the opening of Pequeñeces, an 1890 novel that caused genuine scandal upon publication. Luis Coloma, a Jesuit priest,embedds his protagonist in the rigid world of late-nineteenth-century Spanish academia, where success is measured in medals and pedigree, yet where a child can feel utterly abandoned. Through Paquito's eyes, we witness the manufactured piety of the aristocracy, the hollow rituals of academic celebration, and the particular loneliness of a gifted child starved of genuine affection. Coloma's Providentialist naturalist gaze spares no one: the snobbery of wealthy families, the spiritual emptiness behind religious display, the way society measures worth by birth rather than humanity. Yet at its heart, this is a story about what it means to feel small in a world that demands you perform bigness. The title Littleness becomes both indictment and compassion: the smallness of adults who fail children, and the smallness that children carry when love is conditional on achievement.
