Peace on Earth, Good-Will to Dogs

There's a girl named Flame Nourice, and if that name doesn't immediately make you want to know more about her, this probably isn't your kind of book. Flame is young enough to still believe in the magic of Christmas, old enough to orchestrate a holiday scheme that spirals gloriously out of control. When she discovers that a house in her village - the mysterious Rattle-Pane House - has been secretly inhabited by dogs, she decides they deserve a proper Christmas celebration. What follows is cheerful chaos: the planning, the executing, the inevitable disasters, and the quiet hope that snow will arrive before the night is through. The adults conveniently disappear (as they do in the best children's stories), leaving Flame to navigate eccentric household help and her own grand ambitions. This is slight, it's sentimental, and it knows exactly what it is. Published in the early twentieth century, it carries that era's particular warmth - the kind of book your great-grandmother might have read by firelight, when Christmas still felt like a door that could open into wonder. If you like your holidays with fur, joy, and a little bit of pandemonium, Flame is waiting.
