This story revolves around a young girl named Paula, who arrives at her relatives' home after becoming an orphan. Through her adventurous spirit and a heart full of kindness, the narrative explores themes of faith, love, and the challenges of adjusting to a new life while grappling with the heavy burden of loss. The opening of the story introduces Paula's arrival at her relatives' home after the death of her father. We are drawn into the contrasting dynamics of her new family—particularly her interactions with her cousins, especially Lisita, who is eager to welcome her. The chapter illustrates the confusion and excitement surrounding Paula's transition, highlighting her previous life in the Waldensian Valley, where she was deeply devoted to her father and the teachings of her faith.
