Paul Gerhardt's Spiritual Songs: Translated by John Kelly

Paul Gerhardt was one of the most beloved hymn writers in the German Protestant tradition, and these 1867 translations preserve the theological depth and emotional intimacy that made his original verses sing across 17th-century Germany. Written during a time of religious upheaval and personal hardship, these hymns move from the profound mysteries of the Holy Trinity to the triumphant declaration of Christ's resurrection, offering readers a window into how faithful Christians once wrestled with doubt, loss, and longing, then found their way back to hope. The collection includes hymns for specific liturgical occasions, but what emerges most powerfully is Gerhardt's willingness to bring his full human vulnerability into conversation with divine truth. John Kelly's translation aims for fidelity to both meaning and spirit, and while some of the Victorian-era language shows its age, the underlying passion remains vivid. For readers interested in the roots of English-language hymnody, the history of Protestant spirituality, or poetry that wrestles honestly with faith and suffering, this collection offers genuine reward.
