Patrick Henry

Moses Coit Tyler brings Patrick Henry back to life in this landmark 1887 biography of the orator who virtually invented American revolutionary rhetoric. Henry was not a philosopher like Jefferson or a general like Washington; he was something more dangerous to British rule: a voice that could make an audience weep, rage, and reach for their muskets. Tyler traces Henry's journey from struggling storekeeper to the lawyer who demolished the Parson's Cause, from the Virginia House of Burgesses to the Continental Congress, culminating in that now-iconic declaration at the Second Virginia Convention: "Give me liberty, or give me death!" What distinguishes Tyler\'s account is his access to materials earlier biographers lacked, including testimony from Henry's family, allowing him to separate legend from fact while preserving the fire. The biography captures both Henry's magnetic oratory and his contradictions: the man who helped forge a new nation yet grew suspicious of centralized power, who championed liberty while holding complex views on issues that would divide the republic he helped birth. Tyler writes with the literary critic's eye for character and the historian's rigor, making this more than a reverent chronicle but a nuanced portrait of a man whose words still echo.
