Pastors and Masters

Step into the claustrophobic, hilariously performative world of a 19th-century boys' prep school, where senior master Charles Merry presides over a chaotic domain. He's a master of bluster, papering over the myriad deficiencies of his staff and students with an almost theatrical bravado. Through a series of densely packed, often exclusively dialogue-driven scenes, Compton-Burnett dissects the intricate, often absurd, power dynamics and the constant struggle between outward appearances and inner realities among this peculiar cast of characters.
