Partakers of Plenty: A Study of the First Thanksgiving

Partakers of Plenty: A Study of the First Thanksgiving

James Deetz

History - American

Every American knows the Thanksgiving story: Pilgrims and Indians, a peaceful meal, giving thanks. But the real 1621 harvest celebration was something else entirely. It lasted three days. Ninety Wampanoag showed up. There was drinking, shooting matches, and wrestling. It was less about solemn gratitude than diplomatic calculation and communal relief. James Deetz, a historical archaeologist, excavates the mythology surrounding this holiday to reveal what actually happened in Plymouth that autumn. Drawing on Edward Winslow's firsthand letters, material evidence from the colony, and Wampanoag perspectives, he reconstructs a story far richer and more complicated than the sanitized version taught in schools. The Pilgrims were not yet the well-established settlers of later mythology but desperate newcomers whose survival depended on Indigenous knowledge and generosity. Massasoit and his people were not peripheral figures at a white man's table but powerful allies whose diplomatic presence made the feast possible. Deetz shows how a three-day harvest festival, rooted in English tradition and Native American foodways, became the origin story of an American holiday one that obscures as much as it reveals.
