Pamphilia to Amphilanthus
Pamphilia to Amphilanthus, published in 1621, is the first sonnet sequence by an Englishwoman, Lady Mary Wroth. The collection features a female speaker, Pamphilia, who expresses her love for a male figure, Amphilanthus, subverting traditional gender roles in poetry. The work is believed to reflect Wroth's own complex relationship with her cousin, William Herbert, making it a notable exploration of love and desire from a woman's perspective.
