Palissy the Huguenot Potter: A True Tale

In 16th-century France, a potter named Bernard Palissy became consumed by an impossible obsession: to unlock the secret of Italian enamel, a mystery no French craftsman had ever solved. He had no patron, no training, and no money, only a vision that would consume decades of his life. C. L. Brightwell's 1858 account follows this stubborn Huguenot from his humble workshop in Saintes through years of crushing failure, mounting family hardship, and the ever-present shadow of religious persecution. We watch him burn his own furniture to feed his kiln. We see his children go hungry while he mixes pigments that fail, again and again. This is a story about the terrible cost of artistic obsession, and the particular courage required of a man who refused to stop believing in his vision, even when belief meant danger in a nation tearing itself apart over faith.
