Paddy at Home ("Chez Paddy")

Written in 1887 by a French baron who traveled through Ireland at the height of the Land War, this book offers a rare foreigner's view of a nation in revolt. Edmond Mandat-Grancey walked the roads of rural Ireland, speaking with tenant farmers facing eviction, nationalist leaders plotting resistance, and ordinary people caught between centuries of oppression and the desperate hope of change. His observations capture a country in transformation: the meetings where agrarian rebellion meets political nationalism, the crumbling power of Anglo-Irish landlords, and the quiet dignity of peasants defending their right to exist on the land their families had worked for generations. The baron brings outsider curiosity and Continental perspective to questions that consumed Britain, offering observations that an English writer might never make. Part travel narrative, part political portrait, the book serves as a vivid time capsule of late Victorian Ireland on the edge of revolution. For readers interested in the roots of Irish independence or the art of witnessing history from its margins.
