In 1852, Ezra Meeker crossed the Oregon Trail with his young wife and infant daughter, pulling their possessions in an ox-cart through 2,000 miles of wilderness. In 1906, at age eighty-six, he walked the same route backward to Iowa, retracing every mile of his lost youth. In 1915, he drove it in a Model T. Later still, he flew over it in a biplane. He spent his ninety-eight years watching America transform from frontier to modernity, and this memoir is his attempt to hold onto something precious before it vanished entirely.
