Our Young Folks at Home and Abroad

This is childhood as it was once imagined: gentle, wonder-struck, and aching with small emotions that feel enormous to those who feel them first. Gathered from the late nineteenth century, this anthology of sketches and poems offers young readers a world where a kitten separated from its mother becomes a profound drama, where two little girls named Mamie and Fannie learn something essential about care and loss, and where every creature, from sparrow to spaniel, seems to carry a small lesson in its paws. The illustrations throughout possess the soft, meticulous charm of another era, rendering scenes of domestic warmth and outdoor adventure with delicate attention. What distinguishes this collection is not its didacticism, which remains light as a feather, but its refusal to patronize its young audience. The stories trust children with real feelings: sadness, fear, the complicated love between siblings and friends. For readers who treasure vintage children's literature, who want to step into a world where moral lessons came wrapped in beauty rather than bombast, this anthology offers an hour of quiet enchantment.
