Our Western Hills: How to reach them; And the Views from their Summits

A charming Victorian guide to the hills of Western Scotland, written by an enthusiastic pedestrian who clearly believed that the finest views come to those willing to climb for them. This practical companion walks you through reaching hills like Loudon Hill, Tinto, and Cairn-table, sharing not just routes but the historical stories embedded in each summit. The author finds these peaks endlessly interesting, filling the pages with antiquarian anecdotes and observations on the plants and landscapes that reward the climber. Written with the earnest conviction that mountains offer solace and inspiration to anyone who bothers to climb them, this book captures a golden age when reaching a Scottish hilltop meant something. It is both a time capsule of late Victorian recreation and a still-useful invitation to explore hills accessible to anyone with average physical endurance. For readers who love old guidebooks, Scottish geography, or the simple pleasure of following an enthusiastic writer up a mountain.
