Our Little Siamese Cousin

Step aboard a houseboat on Thailand's Meinam River and into the life of young Chin, a child of Siam whose first birthday opens this affectionate portrait of early 20th-century Thai life. Through Chin's eyes, readers discover the rituals that shape a day: the significance of clothing and bathing, the joy of festival and performance, the gentle authority of parents navigating their first child's milestones. The narrative moves through the rhythms of a river-bound household, where the water outside mirrors the currents of daily life within. Wade writes with the warm certainty of an era that believed introducing children to distant cousins across the globe might plant seeds of lasting goodwill. This is not anthropology in narrative form but something softer and more ambitious: an invitation to see childhood as a universal language, spoken differently in Bangkok than in Boston but carrying the same tender vocabulary of wonder, play, and belonging.
