Our Little Japanese Cousin

This charming slice-of-life from 1904 follows nine-year-old Lotus Blossom through the streets, homes, and celebrations of her Japan. Through her eyes, young readers encounter tea ceremonies and temple festivals, the gentle rhythms of family life with her brother Toyo, and the intricate etiquette that shapes daily interaction. Wade writes with genuine warmth and curiosity, offering American children an intimate portrait of a culture that was then barely known to most Western readers. The book captures something precious and vanished: a moment when Japan was becoming known to America through the innocent lens of childhood friendship rather than politics or conflict. It's a window into a vanished era, both in terms of the culture it depicts and the era from which it speaks. Parents should note that the book reflects early 20th-century perspectives that may feel dated to contemporary readers.
