Our Little Finnish Cousin

Two siblings discover the wild beauty of Finland in this tender early 20th-century portrait of childhood. Juhani, a stubborn and curious boy, and his spirited younger sister Maja wander through golden autumn forests, row across glassy lakes, and follow tiny paths through fields where cattle graze beside peculiar tall haystacks. As they gather whortleberries and encounter local farmers, attend church gatherings, and join in community celebrations, Winlow captures something timeless: the way children experience the world as pure adventure, every ordinary moment charged with wonder. The Finland here is not a geography lesson but a living landscape, alive with birches gleaming like gold and marshy hillsides heavy with berries. For young readers, it offers a window into another time and place, yet the sibling dynamics, the thrill of exploration, and the comfort of community feel achingly familiar across the century.
