Our Little Boer Cousin

Step into the sun-baked veld of the Transvaal, where a young Boer boy named Petrus Joubert tends his family's farm against the threat of locust plagues and the lingering echoes of conflict with the English. Written in 1915, this installment in the Little Cousin Series offers a vivid window into Boer life at a pivotal moment in South African history. Through Petrus's days at farm-school, his adventures with fellow Boer children, and his responsibilities alongside his younger brother Theunis, readers discover a community bound by tradition, resilience, and hard-won pride. The novel captures both the warmth of rural family life and the pressures of surviving in challenging territory, where neighbors band together against shared threats. While firmly a product of its era, the book preserves details of Boer culture, language, and values that might otherwise have been lost to time. For young readers interested in history beyond the familiar narratives, it offers an uncommon glimpse into a world rarely depicted in children's literature.
