Our Friend John Burroughs

John Burroughs was the kind of writer who made you feel he was sitting right beside you, pointing out a hawk circling over the Hudson River or pausing to watch trilliums bloom in the spring. This biography, written by his friend and neighbor Clara Barrus, captures the man behind those beloved nature essays, the naturalist who walked with presidents, befriended John Muir, and helped shape America's relationship with the wild. Barrus knew Burroughs intimately, and her portrait reveals not just the celebrated 'Father of the National Parks' but a warm, witty, sometimes contradictory man who answered every letter from his readers and considered the land itself a kind of scripture. The book moves through his friendships, his writing habits, his philosophy of observation, and the quiet places where he found his greatest inspiration. For anyone who has ever felt they knew Burroughs through his prose, this is the chance to meet the friend behind the words, a man who believed that paying attention to the world was the deepest form of prayer.
