Other Fools and Their Doings, or, Life Among the Freedmen

Written in 1880, just fifteen years after the Civil War ended, this satirical novel drops the reader into the raw political fury of Reconstruction-era South Carolina. Through the eyes of Deacon Atwood and Captain Black, two white Southerners riding through the backcountry, we witness the burning resentment of a defeated people forced to share power with their former slaves. The men kvetch and scheme against 'carpetbaggers,' Black voters, and the new political order, their complaints ranging from the petty to the poisonous. Goff's satire cuts in multiple directions: he mocks the crude greed of Northern opportunists, the bombastic posturing of old-guard Southerners, and the absurd theater of politics in a society torn apart. But the book is most valuable as an artifact: a preservation of the exact rhetoric and grievances that white Southerners used to roll back Black rights and reassert dominance. It's uncomfortable reading, deliberately so. Goff was no progressive, and his characters speak the language of their time, which is precisely why this novel matters. For readers interested in the Reconstruction period, in how white supremacy reconsolidated itself, or in the raw primary sources of American history, this book is an unvarnished time capsule.
