Ordeal by Battle

Written in the crucible of 1915, when the Great War was already devouring a generation, Frederick Scott Oliver composed this urgent analysis of how Europe stumbled into catastrophe. Oliver was no distant historian - he was writing as shells fell and empires crumbled, attempting to render intelligible the political failures and fatal miscalculations that had ignited continental war. His account traces the tangled web of alliances, ambitions, and misunderstandings that bound nations together while breeding distrust, focusing particularly on Britain's reluctant entanglement with Continental powers it had long sought to avoid. He examines how Germany's aggressive diplomacy and Austria-Hungary's imperious demands met with reactive caution from London, creating a deadly asymmetry in resolve that observers at the time recognized all too well. The book endures not as definitive history but as a window into how intelligent contemporaries struggled to comprehend a catastrophe that confounded all expectations - a vital primary source for understanding how the war's origins were perceived by those who lived through its opening months.
