Oppressions of the Sixteenth Century in the Islands of Orkney and Zetland: From Original Documents
1859
This 1859 compilation draws on original 16th-century documents to expose a brutal chapter in Scottish history: the exploitation of Orkney and Zetland (Shetland) after Norway ceded the islands to Scotland in 1472. The text focuses on Lord Robert Stewart and the officials who systematically preyed upon the native population, particularly the Odallers, the islands' traditional freeholders. Through petitions, legal records, and correspondence, the author reveals how feudal overlords and bishops imposed crushing economic burdens, manipulated law to strip away ancient rights, and treated these northern islands as a colony to be plundered. This is not a narrative history but something more valuable: raw primary documentation of how colonialism operated in miniature, and how the islanders fought back against systematized theft of their land and liberties. For readers drawn to dark historical byways, the roots of Scottish feudalism, or stories of ordinary people crushed by distant power, this offers an unflinching record of resistance and defeat.
