On the Tree Top

For young readers, this anthology offers a doorway into a world where beanstalks touch the sky, pumpkins transform into carriages, and clever cats help their masters win kingdoms. The collection opens with "The Gold Spinner," a retelling of Rumpelstiltskin where a miller's daughter faces an impossible task: spin straw into gold or lose her life. Her desperation, her bargains, and her ultimate salvation set the tone for what follows: stories where wit and kindness triumph, where promises carry weight, and where happy endings feel both wondrous and earned. Bates, writing in the late 19th century, gathers beloved tales that have traveled through generations. Here are Jack's adventures with giants, Cinderella's midnight transformation, Puss in Boots' clever schemes. Interspersed with whimsical verses, these stories blend entertainment with gentle wisdom. They are the kind of tales read aloud by firelight, where the moral emerges naturally from the adventure itself. What makes this collection endure is its generosity. It offers no cynical twists, no dark subversions, only the pure pleasure of story. For parents seeking to share the roots of fairy tale tradition with children, or for anyone who remembers being read to at bedtime, this anthology is a quiet treasure. It preserves the magic exactly as it was meant to be felt.
