On Commando

This is a soldier's memoir written in a prison cell. Dietlof Van Warmelo, a young Afrikaner fighting against the British Empire, composed these pages while imprisoned at Ahmednagar, captured after one of the many battles that defined the Second Boer War. The narrative traces his commando unit's journey from initial eager departure through the grinding hardships that followed: inadequate supplies, relentless marches, exposure, and the slow erosion of youthful enthusiasm. What distinguishes this account is its raw, unvarnished honesty. Van Warmelo does not glorify war or romanticize sacrifice. He documents what he saw and felt as a participant in a conflict that the British eventually won but that left the Afrikaner people devastated. The book provides a rare first-person perspective on a war often overlooked in Anglophone histories, told from the losing side. It endures because it was written in captivity, transforming the immediate experience of war into something like testimony, composed while memory was still raw and the outcome still uncertain.
