Old Fort Snelling, 1819-1858

At the confluence of the Mississippi and Minnesota rivers, where empires had collided for centuries, the United States built Fort Snelling in 1819 not just as a military installation, but as an assertion of sovereignty over a land already thick with history. Marcus Lee Hansen traces the fort's four decades of existence through the lens of soldiers marching, diplomats negotiating, and Indigenous nations resisting and adapting to the relentless tide of American expansion. The narrative moves beyond simple military chronicle to examine how this isolated post became a nexus where French fur traders, Dakota and Ojibwe bands, territorial governors, and frontier settlers negotiated survival in a world undergoing violent transformation. Hansen, writing with the scholarly precision of early twentieth-century historiography, documents the fort's abandonment in 1858 as a moment of closure for one chapter in the ongoing story of the American West, yet leaves readers understanding that the currents set in motion at Fort Snelling continue to shape the region today.
