Old English Chronicles

Here are the raw, unfiltered voices of the people who lived through England's most formative centuries. Gildas writes with the fury of a prophet denouncing his contemporaries' sins while the Roman world crumbles around him. Asser, friend and counselor to King Alfred, offers the closest thing we have to a firsthand account of the great king at war and at study. Ethelwerd traces the tangled genealogy of Alfred's descendants with the anxiety of a man watching his world transform. Nenius compiles conflicting tales of Britain's first inhabitants, struggling to reconcile legend with memory. And Geoffrey of Monmouth gives us the legendary kings - Arthur, Cæsar, Brutus - the myths that would shape English identity for a thousand years. These are not polished histories but urgent testimonies: chronicles written by monks, scholars, and courtiers trying to make sense of invasions, collapses, and the slow birth of a nation. They contain errors, biases, and inventions. They also contain everything we know about England before the Norman Conquest.
