おくのほそ道 (Oku no Hosomichi)

Matsuo Bashō

Oku no Hosomichi, or Narrow Road to Oku, is a significant work by Matsuo Bashō, written in 1689. It chronicles Bashō's journey through Japan's northern regions, inspired by the landscapes and places celebrated by ancient poets. This travelogue reflects Bashō's commitment to the poetic ideal of wandering, as he traversed thousands of miles on foot over 156 days. It is considered Bashō's most renowned work and a cornerstone of Japanese literature.
