In 1859, Dr. Martin Robison Delany led an expedition into the Niger Valley, not as a colonizer but as a visionary searching for a new beginning. Delany traveled through regions of what is now Nigeria, documenting geography, climate, resources, and the lives of local populations with the meticulous eye of a physician and the ambition of a man who believed his people deserved more than the chains of American racism.
