Obed Hussey, Who, of All Inventors, Made Bread Cheap

Before the reaper, harvesting wheat was backbreaking labor that could ruin a family for weeks. Obed Hussey built the first successful mechanical reaper in 1831, a machine so revolutionary it made bread cheap for millions. This early 20th century biography recovers the story of a humble, stubborn inventor from Maine who watched his creation transform agriculture while rivals like Cyrus McCormick claimed the glory. Hussey spent decades fighting patent disputes, competing manufacturers, and a system that rarely rewards the man who arrives first. The book traces his journey from workshop to field, through courtroom battles and the loneliness of being overshadowed, to the broad implications of his invention: feeding growing cities, releasing millions from farm labor, and laying the foundation for industrial agriculture. Written with admiration for an underappreciated genius, it asks readers to consider who we remember and who we forget, and what we owe to the minds that quietly changed everything.
