Nursery Comedies: Twelve Tiny Plays for Children

This collection of twelve tiny plays, written in 1892 by Lady Florence Bell, offers a window into late Victorian childhood that feels remarkably fresh today. These aren't diluted adult stories dressed in animal costumes. They're theatrical blueprints written specifically for children to perform, with roles that small actors can inhabit and plots that move at a child's pace. The opening play, "What Happened to Henny Penny," introduces a wonderfully nervous hen who believes the sky has fallen after something bonks her on the head. As she gathers an increasingly absurd parade of friends - Cockie Lockie, Ducky Daddles, Turkish Lurky - the story builds toward a quest to report to the Queen. The humor lands because the characters are genuinely funny, not because someone added a joke. These plays require minimal props, making them genuinely performable by children themselves. Lady Bell understood something essential: children don't just want to watch theater, they want to become it. A century later, these twelve tiny comedies still invite exactly that.
