Ninon De L'enclos and Her Century

In the libertine courts of Louis XIV's France, one woman refused to be ornament. Anne de L'Enclos, called Ninon, was born to a poet father and puritan mother, raised on contradiction, and destined to become the most celebrated salon hostess in Paris. Her father encouraged her mind; her society expected her silence. She chose neither. Rowsell's 1910 portrait captures a woman who dressed as a boy to attend fencing lessons, hosted intellectuals who rewrote the rules of French literature, and refused marriage not from coldness but from an insistence on self-determination that was radical in an age of female dependence. Through Ninon's circle, who included the witty La Rochefoucauld, the philosophical Descartes, and countless admirers, we see not just one woman's rebellion but the birth of modern intellectual salon culture. This is biography as cultural excavation: a portrait of a society in transformation, seen through the defiant life of one woman who refused to be contained by it. For readers hungry for forgotten histories of female autonomy, Ninon's century offers a glittering, surprising answer.
