Nicomachean Ethics

Aristotle

What does it mean to live a good life? Aristotle posed this question in the fourth century BCE, and his answer remains one of the most influential frameworks for human flourishing ever devised. The Nicomachean Ethics is not abstract philosophy for scholarly contemplation, it is practical wisdom meant to be lived. Aristotle argues that virtue is not mere theoretical knowledge but a habit of character, developed through repeated action and guided by practical reason. He introduces the concept of the "golden mean": moral excellence lies not in extremes but in finding the balanced ground between excess and deficiency. Courage is the mean between recklessness and cowardice; temperance lies between indulgence and insensibility. Aristotle extends his analysis to friendship, pleasure, and the nature of happiness itself, arguing that eudaimonia, human flourishing, is the highest good, the goal toward which all other goals point. Based on his lectures at the Lyceum and edited by his son Nicomachus, this work laid the groundwork for two millennia of Western moral thought. It speaks to anyone who has ever wondered what makes a life meaningful.
