Narrative of the Fenian Invasion of Canada

In 1866, Irish-American nationalists launched a bold military campaign against British Canada, believing that striking at the Empire's North American holdings might force London to negotiate Irish independence. Alexander Somerville, drawing on direct observation and inside sources, documents the Fenian Brotherhood's invasion with striking immediacy. He introduces Colonel John O'Neill and the ambitious strategy: cross the border, seize Canadian territory, and use it as leverage in the fight for Irish freedom from British rule. What emerges is more than a military account. Somerville probes the Fenian movement's fiery ideology, the desperate optimism of Irish exiles in America, and the explosive tensions between the United States, British North America, and the cause of Irish liberation. He examines how the invasion threatened to drag America into the Empire's conflicts and placed Canadian citizens in the crossfire of someone else's war. Written close to the events it describes, this narrative preserves the urgency and uncertainty of a border in crisis. It remains essential reading for anyone interested in 19th-century North American history, the transnational reach of Irish nationalism, or the volatile relationship between imperialism and resistance.
