Nacha Regules

Buenos Aires, 1910. The city basks in Centennial glory, but in the shadow of grand boulevards, women like Nacha Regules navigate a world where survival demands compromise. She is a cabaret dancer and prostitute, yet Gálvez renders her not as social problem but as fully human: intelligent, dignified, desperately seeking love and respect in a society that has already rendered its verdict. Through her relationships with a bourgeois doctor who offers salvation and the man who offers only passion, the novel examines what society demands of women who have fallen, and whether redemption is ever truly possible or merely another form of control. Gálvez's naturalist eye captures the glittering surface of Argentine modernity alongside its moral hypocrisy, creating a portrait of a city and a class system that both fascinates and repels. For readers interested in early feminist literature and the roots of Latin American social fiction, Nacha Regules remains a provocative, uncomfortable, and historically vital document.
