Nō Plays of Japan
Nō Plays of Japan is a collection of classical Japanese musical dramas that have been performed since the 14th century. Developed by Kan'ami and his son Zeami, Noh is characterized by its use of masks, stylized gestures, and a blend of dance and music to convey complex emotions and narratives, often based on traditional literature. This edition features translations by Arthur Waley, a significant figure in the transmission of East Asian culture to the West, making these ancient texts accessible to modern readers. Noh remains the oldest major theatre art still regularly performed today.
