Mythology Among the Hebrews and Its Historical Development

This book shattered a prevailing 19th-century assumption: that the Hebrew people, unlike their neighbors, possessed no true mythology. Ignác Goldziher, the Hungarian-born scholar who would become a founder of modern Islamic studies, mounted a rigorous argument that Hebrew myths were not merely primitive stories but sophisticated cultural productions rooted in natural phenomena and psychological processes shared by all humanity. The text establishes an essential premise: mythology is a universal human faculty, emerging not from racial or linguistic difference but from the common psychological architecture of our species. Goldziher systematically analyzes biblical figures, from the patriarchs to the heroes of Judges, treating them as legitimate mythological material worthy of the same comparative methods applied to Greek, Norse, or Egyptian traditions. The work distinguished myth from religion itself, laying groundwork that would transform how scholars approached Hebrew texts. Over a century later, Goldziher's argument feels less controversial and more like common sense, but this book remains the foundational act of recovery that made such a shift possible.
