My Spanish Year

Whishaw arrives in Spain with the wide-eyed wonder of someone encountering an entire world for the first time. Her 1900s travelogue captures a country that no longer exists: bullfights in their full spectacle, village festivals untouched by tourism, the rhythms of daily life in a Spain that moved to its own ancient clock. As a foreigner, she notices what natives overlook, the particular way a shopkeeper arranges his fruit, the elaborate choreography of the afternoon promenade, the contradictions that confound and delight her in equal measure. Her humor is gentle but sharp, the kind that emerges from genuine puzzlement rather than superiority. This is travel writing before the genre learned to perform expertise; instead, she offers the pleasures of a curious mind encountering the unfamiliar, making discoveries alongside the reader. For anyone who wants to see Europe before modernity reshaped it, or who simply loves a well-observed account of stumbling through another culture with both confusion and joy.
