My Recollections of Lord Byron

Teresa, contessa di Guiccioli

1806

Biographies, British Literature

Translated by Hubert E. H. (Hubert Edward Henry), Sir Jerningham

This is Byron as never before seen: not the darkly romantic Byronic hero of legend, but the flesh-and-blood man who debated philosophy over breakfast, who wept at Mozart, who was often kinder than he let anyone believe. Teresa Guiccioli was eighteen when she met the forty-one-year-old poet in Ravenna; she became his mistress, his companion through the final years of his life, and ultimately the witness to his death in Greece. Written decades later from memory, her account carries the particular ache of trying to pin down someone who was always in motion, literary reputation calcifying even as the man himself kept evolving. Guiccioli writes partly as defense: she wants to separate Byron the poet from Byron the man, to show that the tortured Byronic heroes were performances, not confessions. What emerges instead is something more complicated and more human: a portrait of genius in its private unguarded moments, seen by someone who loved him enough to remember.
